Now I personally had to work a long time to get lips down. Lips are nearly as important as eyes when it somes to the face. They show emotion in very powerful ways and if one understands their basic physical makeup and can manipulate the pen well you can make your characters exceptionally expressive.

The key to lips in my mind is proportion, placement and style. Note the lips on the left, particularly the side veiws. See how changing the width and shape can alter the general appearance drastically.One can make bold lush lips or mischievoues thin lips with a simple tweak of the pen. This is something one should always consider when drawing their characters mouths.

Also balance and form are critical!!! Lopsided, and unshapely lips will difigure any character. Now note the Triangle guide. The lips can be broken and measured with a simple triangle design. First draw a horizontal line...next split the line in half. Then I would suggest lightly sketching your lip design. Then either with your eye or with a ruler seperate the lips with three different size triangles. This should give you a very evenly placed configurement to work with! Or just help you to check to make sure. After a while and soe practice you will find yourself using this technique less and less as your eye is trained to see it and judge accordingly.

Next of corse are the wedge designs that simply show you how to break the lips in a more basic form. And as I have said with all the others practice, practice and practice. Find your freinds, magazines heck even break out the movies and draw like crazy!

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.

Great lips here. I wonder though, how do you draw great looking lips on men without making them look too feminine? I've found that outlining the actual lips and shading them makes it look like they are wearing lipstick, so I tend to draw them with anime-looking mouths. ^^;

I guess shading really defines whether lips can be masculine or feminine when we're not painting lipstick on them...
